Las Baulas Marine National Park

Overview:

Las Baulas Marine National Park is a protected area that encompasses Playa Grande and several other nearby beaches and estuaries. Established in 1991, the park is named after the leatherback turtles (baulas in Spanish) that nest on its shores.

Leatherback Turtle Nesting:

The park is one of the most important nesting sites for the endangered leatherback sea turtles in the world. From October to February, these majestic creatures come ashore to lay their eggs. Guided night tours allow visitors to witness the nesting process, providing a unique and unforgettable experience while ensuring the turtles are not disturbed.

Biodiversity:

Beyond the leatherback turtles, the park is home to a rich array of wildlife, including howler monkeys, iguanas, and numerous bird species. The estuaries and mangrove forests within the park are vital habitats for many species and offer excellent opportunities for birdwatching and nature tours.

Conservation Efforts:

Las Baulas Marine National Park plays a critical role in the conservation of marine and coastal ecosystems. The park’s establishment has helped protect the leatherback turtle population and preserve the area’s natural habitats.

Whales in Guanacaste – Sailing Flamingo

Where and how to watch whales in Guanacaste?

Whale watching, especially humpback whale watching, is a breathtaking spectacle, especially for nature lovers, and especially for children.

Whales in Guanacaste

Humpback whales come to the Pacific waters of Costa Rica and the Guanacaste region during several months of the year, and it is especially the humpback whales that offer the most breathtaking, almost acrobatic, spectacle of all species.

In addition to the humpbacks, there are other species that come to the Guanacaste and Pacific waters of Costa Rica, such as false killer whales, orcas, as well as other species, the latter more rare.

No matter if you bet on luck or patience, seeing humpback whales at sea, with their calves and hopefully jumping and doing acrobatics, is a spectacle that everyone should witness once in a lifetime.

These giants come to Costa Rica for eight months in total (in two different seasons): the longest humpback whale watching season in the world. In the province, they arrive in Santa Elena Bay, the Gulf of Papagayo and off Sámara and Camaronal beaches (See infographic).

The marine biologist, specialist in whales and dolphins of the Keto Foundation, David Palacios, explained that since 2005 the country has a Regulation for the operation of activities related to cetaceans in Costa Rica, which provides guidelines on how to be a respectful tourist and tour operator.

Humpback whale

First of all, take into account that your boat should not be less than 200 meters away from the whales or spend more than 30 minutes near the same group of these animals.

Do not feed, touch or swim with them. Do not make noise during the tour. For example, listening to music in the boat while you are close to the whales will hinder their communication.

“In the case of Guanacaste there is no certification that one can demand from a tour operator to know if they are respectful of the Law,” said Palacios. “But I recommend looking for companies that have some other type of certification with the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), as a minimum,” Palacios added.

Guanacaste, in northwestern Costa Rica, is a particularly interesting province with many natural, cultural and folkloric attractions.

Guanacaste is very diverse geographically and topographically, and its area covers from the entire volcanic mountain range of Guanacaste to all the plains and the coast, from the border with Nicaragua to almost the south of the Nicoya Peninsula.
This diversity of altitudes, climates and microclimates, makes the province has a unique biodiversity of flora and fauna.

It is also the region where 90 percent of the country’s tropical dry forests are preserved, a habitat that is even more endangered than the tropical rainforest.

Guanacaste
Guanacaste Beaches

Some of the most beautiful beaches of Costa Rica are along the coast of the province, distributed in different cantons, starting from the north with La Cruz, Liberia, Carrillo, Santa Cruz, Nicoya and Nandayure.

Some of the best known beaches are Roca Bruja, Tamarindo, Conchal, Flamingo, Avellanas, Playa Negra, Samara, Guiones, Nosara, Barrigona, San Juanillo, Matapalo, Nacazcolo, Virador and Playa Carrillo.

All beaches are different and cater to the different tastes and interests of visitors, from those who like surfing, diving, snorkeling to those who like totally calm waters and no waves.

The province is also home to a diversity of national parks distributed throughout the province.

The Guanacaste Conservation Area, including Guanacaste National Park, Orosi Volcano, Cacao Volcano and Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, protect a diversity of microclimates and forest types.

On the high peaks there is a wonderful cloud forest, while on the slopes grows a transitional montane forest, which, in the lower parts, is transformed into a tropical dry forest.

The area is so extensive and varied that even on the Caribbean-North Zone slope, there are abundant tropical rainforests.

National Parks

Other national parks, such as Las Baulas, Ostional and Junquillal protect important extensions of beaches and estuaries, as well as mangroves and dry tropical lowland forests.
Diría National Park, for example, in the heart of the Nicoya Peninsula, near Santa Cruz, protects the last forests, some primary, of the peninsula, which was ecologically devastated some 40 years ago and is now in a state of accelerated recovery.

People and culture

The people of Guanacaste are known nationally and internationally for their sense of welcome, and their welcoming way of treating visitors.

Several specialty foods are native to Guanacaste, among them Gallina Achiotada, rosquillas and various other products made from corn.

Some of the cities of the province are considered the cradles of the folklore of the area and the country, such is the case of Santa Cruz and Nicoya.
